National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day

Celebrated annually on the 4th August, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day is a time to honour and uplift Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, recognising their strength, resilience and connection to culture, family and community.

Established in 1988 by the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC – National Voice for Our Children) during the bicentennial protests, the day acknowledges the historical and ongoing impacts of colonisation, particularly for those affected by the Stolen Generations. It stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural identity and the role of community in raising strong, confident children.

Each year, communities across the country mark the occasion with diverse and vibrant celebrations, cultural events, storytelling, art, dance and community gatherings. These activities help foster pride, inclusion and cultural belonging for children and their families.

This year’s theme, “Little Footsteps, Big Future,” celebrates the journeys Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children take as they grow, each step guided by culture, community and connection to Country. It encourages us all to listen to and nurture children’s voices, dreams and potential.

We invite everyone to stand together in respect and support of a future where every child walks strong in their identity and is empowered to shape their own path. By celebrating this day, we strengthen our shared commitment to cultural respect, inclusivity and a brighter future for all children.
